I am curious if anyone has 3D printed parts for their older motors. I have a project motor that I'm working on, it's a '76 Johnson 9.9. It is missing the choke lever, carb silencer (which is no longer available) and the pull starter is broken. The pull starter part is the lower pulley (Start Pulley-Lower 0318939).

My son is going to try and scan in the broken part and print a new one. I just didn't know if anyone has tried it before.

try TIM's outboard
you can probably get the used parts at a low price without to much trouble

Should be lots of used parts like that available.----Likely depends or the area where you are too.

Interesting concept. I just wonder if the material you use with the 3D printer is oil and fuel impervious? If so, could be a workable idea...

most home 3D printers wont have the correct resin or resolution

most industrial 3D printers will also have limitations.

fuel vapor and oil will be problematic on carb parts, and the material strength wont be there for the pulley

plenty of NOS and used parts out there for johnny-rudes, why go thru the trouble?

now metal parts, that is different. I have had gear box cases 3D -laser sintered for prototypes.

I had a friend whose company manufacture's plastic autoparts 3D print me a new choke knob/pull for an old 2hp I was working on.
Gave him the broken part and he made measurements from it.
Looks good and works a charm!

I keep hearing about new materials being used in 3D printers. Most likely something out the that will work for you. And remember reading about solvent resitant stuff and kevlar reinforced stuff. Not sure if they were experimental or off the shelf stuff. Keep up the good work and please keep me informed.

I'm currently in the process of having some 3D parts printed to make a silicone mold/jig setup, to cast some Poly bushings into some used 9.9/15hp motor mounts.

Wish me luck. :cool::joyous:

I've wondered if 3D parts could be used for lost pattern investment castings. If a printing resin could be completely dissolved with a solvent, a ceramic mold be made around the 3D pattern Dissolve the pattern and cast an aluminum part. Small electric aluminum melting furnaces cost similar to a lead bullet casting pot.

My company did this with Styrofoam patterns, built a sand mold and dissolved the pattern w/carbon tetrachloride. For less intricate parts we just poured the iron in the full mold and the Styrofoam burnt up as gas and slag.

From my understanding through discussions with my friend who is printing the parts for mould casting for me, there are printing resins that will dissolve with water.

I asked the same question - is it possible to do something for my boat on a 3d printer. I need to find two lifting covers for the usb ports. They must be waterproof and they are not sold separately. I found only this thing, but it does not fit in size. Maybe can I scan it somehow? Tell me, please.
