The armature plate on the 3 hp (or any OMC with the universal mag that I know of) only has a small hole for the plug wire to go through. It can't accommodate a coil with the wire and boot attached. Its one or the other - coil/wire or wire/boot.

Except that...those with a planted wire were installed without the boot...and came with a crimp on connector (not the spring wire type)...and a very short boot which made sliding over the connector easy. I presume it was a short lived design with omc (1950?). The only comparables I've seen still available are for old Techumsas but you have to cut the boot off for installation with these.

OK so i finally got this little baby back together, well almost. I don't know the specified torque for the flywheel. And does anybody have thoughts on cleaning the fuel tank? Hopefully this baby will be running like a top for spring crappie fishing

PierBridge, I'm assuming that all the part numbers you listed would be the same for a 62 Johnson 3 HP JW-17. Is this correct? Thanks Dukboat

dukboat, this particular model was built essentially unchanged from 1951 through 1967 and as a 4 HP up into the 90's.

NEW PARTS TO INSTALL IN A TUNEUP
(2) 584477 coils
(1) 172522 tune kit
(1) 439071 carb kit
(1) 203130 head gasket
(1) 434424 impeller

Total kit will be around 100-135 bucks.

It's awesome! So light, so simple! I mean, you can carry it anywhere, and without gears or shifting, it's basically a weed-eater. Mine is 45 years old and(with a little luck and tlc) it should run for another 45.

Hey, I'm 45 years old also. And with a LOTTA luck and a LOTTA TLC I might last another 45 years also!
