Re: 3m 5200 adhesive/zinc anode
The pitting is not that bad,i thought it was and i'm not so worried about it that much anymore.I went to tinboats to get some info also and there is a guy who has been running aluminum boats for over 40yrs and has had this issue about 30 times with used boats he picked up,i asked him how long it would last like this and what damage it would do in 6-8mths.He asured me that little to no worse damage would happen if constantly trailered in and out of the water and washed down good after every use.
He totally agreed with what steps you all said to do as fas as fixing it but said don't worry about it and just go fishing and fix it in the summer if thats what you want to do.I saw one of his boats he posted for me and i thought mine was bad,the one he's fixing now makes mine look new.I think someone with over 40yrs experience would know what there talkin about so i trust his judgement.
He said you want to make sure you fix it 100%right though in the summer if you want to keep it.
Acetone first, then wire brush all the pits till there is no white powder left and is 100% clean, then wash down, then use the phosphoric acid as zool said, wash down again, then acetone one more time after that, let it dry and then jb weld it,sand it,go with gluv it,then paint over it and done, that should last forever he said as most of you say. After learning about this and how common it is on aluminum boats i'm not as worried as i was before,i just want to fish through the fall to spring and then i will fix the issue.
I have never seen this on any boat i have ever had so it freaked me out.I have always had new boats and that has never happened to any aluminum boat i have ever owned so i didn't really know how bad it was.
Woodonglass i get what your saying but i'm not going to half a#$ it by just throwing primer and paint on it just to strip it down in 6mths again, you know what i'm saying?I'm going to do it all out right in 6 to 8mths or i just won't keep the boat.If i do this i believe in doing 100% right and by then i will have all the time i need on my hands, right now i don't and i'm ready to fish for now. Thanks to everyone on how to repair it,when done i will post pics of before and after.
