I've been up in the air for a year now can't decide weather to go with a 3rd toon or water glide. Price wise there about the same I have a 22 ft boat with a 90hp. My bigger problem is splashing with more the 4 people. The tubes now are U shaped and are 23" I want to sit higher to help with splashing. The water glide sounds great if it does everything it says it will, but the 3rd toon I think will do the same? My boat is only rated for up to a 90 hp motor so can't up the hp unless I try to get a diffent weight plate ( if possible) after adding the 3rd toon. I want to do this in the next month or so but can't seem to make up my mind. Anyone have good and bads of either opinion. If I get alittle speed out of the deal I won't be upset about it either. Thanks

Re: 3rd toon or water glide??? Need help

I’ve had both of them on the same boat and here’s what I found. My boat is 22 feet with 23 inch side toons (no lifting strakes at the time) and an older 140 hp (about 125 hp in today’s standards).

I first put the water glide on to improve speed, handling and turning. It did everything they said it would do no question about it. We were able to tube easy and make turns that were unbelievable for a pontoon boat. The only problem I had was I set it a bit too deep and experienced some prop ventilation when the boat was unloaded. This was my choice to set it this deep so it was nothing against the product. The lift it gave to the boat about 10 feet from the back allowed the boat to plane out well and get the front up (as long as you can balance the weight and not too many large people up front). You won’t go wrong with this product. I also skinned the bottom side of the boat at the same time. It's an unbelievable difference overall in speed and handling. Not the same boat.

The reason I took it off and installed a third pontoon with lifting strakes was thinking that I would gain more speed and, I picked up some other benefits with an in-floor storage compartment, an in-tube fuel tank and a heavy duty transom. The speed didn’t change and if anything lost a 2-3 mph. On the other hand I was able to build a rear swim deck where the fuel tanks were mounted and put on a good ladder. The in-floor storage is great also. In addition, the floatation is better and we trailer it everywhere we go so there’s much less stress on the outer toons with an extra set of runners under the middle. Overall I gave up some speed for: better flotation, extra storage, in-board fuel tank, heavy duty transom and the ability to have a swim deck/ladder. It still turns well and a year or so later I added lifting strake to the outer toons with not much improvement in speed.

The bottom line is that if you are adding the third pontoon for speed, handling and turning and you’re not planning to incorporate a transom on it and a larger motor in the future, I would go with the water glide. It’s much easier to install (just follow their recommendations for mounting height). There may be a little wiggle room and slightly deeper will give you more top end but potential ventilation. It will give you some lift at slow speeds but if you are front heavy at slow speeds you will still get some spray. I still get some with the third toon but not as much.

With a 90 hp I think the speed would not be much improvement with the third toon. It’s all about lift vs. drag and the hp to get it to the sweet spot. I know hydrodynamics and aerodynamics are not exactly the same but here’s my take on it. You could put Boeing 737 wings on a Cessna but there would be too much drag to get it off the ground with the same engine. Only when you have enough horsepower can you take full advantage of the lift. That being said, adding a third pontoon to a boat with a 30-50 hp motor in my estimation would only add drag. If the boat has like yours a 90 – 115 hp motor I would guess the third toon would be neutral if not a slight advantage on speed. With a 125 – 150 hp it would be enough to break through the drag and get on top of the water.

I’m in the process of changing my motor to a later model 150 and hopefully I can take better advantage of the available lift I have with lifting strakes now on all three toons. The older 140 just won’t push it that last bit to break over.

The water glide will not add as much drag as the third pontoon and with the same motor would probably get better top end speed. Either way plan on experimenting with props and spending some bucks there for maximum performance. I had to change props when I installed the water glide and had it modified with the third toon.

thanks that some good input, Im thinking of adding a bigger motor down the road if possible if I do add a 3rd toon it will be with a transom mount on it. I was also wondering I have U shaped outer toons I found someone local that has a toon for sale (Cheap) but it is a round tube not U shaped, do you think that will mess me up in any way or should I stick with a U shaped. also I like the glide from what im hearing the only thing that would make me go with a 3rd toon is long term, I plan on keeping this boat for a long time, its completely redone top to bottom, for under 5k. including boat and trailer. so its hard to go out and spend up near 30-40k for a boat when mine is almost perfect. But if I don't up the HP because im at max Hp right now maybe glide is a better idea. about how much lift did the glide give you? did it help with with water spray? I get a lot of spray from the left side do to weight mainly, but I try to equal it out as best as possible,

Joe, in your previous thread you said you had a twenty foot barge. Is it a 22 footer? Not trying to be difficult, just don't want things to get confusified (technical term).

No problem it is a 22 ft with the deck extension on front the pontoons them self are 22ft so yes it is a 22ft

If you're going for long term with a strong possibility of a larger motor I would lean towards the third toon. It would be easier to put strakes on it now than once it’s mounted. If the round toon is a deal I wouldn’t worry about it but I would skin the underside of the boat. In doing so I would turn the aluminum down to meet the round toon and although it wouldn’t be exactly straight like the U tubes it would channel the water back without thrashing everything along the way and causing drag. Mine was a couple inches deeper than the outer ones but that’s because of its existing size not necessarily the way I planned it but I thought it was better that way. The third toon will give more flotation for sure and more lift while running especially with strakes.

Adding a third toon with the motor mounted on it will most likely require a longer steering cable, shift and throttle cables and wiring harness changes due to length. It just depends on how far back you set the motor. I believe setting it back a little will help performance and balance. If you do lifting strakes I believe you will see a slight bump up in speed with you’re existing motor.

The water glide is the answer if you have a boat that’s not going to be re-engineered and you’re happy with it but you want improve the speed and handling with the least alterations. It’s a nice “bolt-on” you can do over the weekend and hit the lake. Again, I couldn’t believe the difference it made. Based on my experience with the same motor, I believe you will pick up more speed with the water glide than the third toon.

Very interesting thread. I am in the same boat, no pun intended. I have been wondering about the water glide also and like what I hear. I have a chance of picking up a used one that is in great condition for $500. It was installed on a 30 foot partyhut and the guy just putts around the lake so he took it off because he didn't want the added weight. I have been talking to the water glide people and they say it has 800# of floatation after it floats itself. For the $500 I think I should go this route. It will be going on a 21 foot party barge with a 90 etec.

BLC,
Yea that's a heck of a deal, I'd do that in a second. You have a short enough boat and a large enough motor to take advantage of what it has to offer. If you do any tubing you will like the turning and handling and will certainly pick up some speed, plaining and fuel economy. I'd get it before he sells it to someone else.

Enjoying this thread. Also in the same boat, pun intended. Would very much like to hear how the 150 hp performs. I also used to have an older 140 johnson (1978). Blew motor last summer. Now have a 1993 115 evinrude. It's on a 20' lowe with a third log a self made motor pod. with the 140 I could reach 32 mph w/gps. hoping to get same with 115. wasn't running quite up to par last year. Rebuilt carbs over winter floats were set way to low, staving for fuel. Will take out 1st weekend in may to see. I,m thinking of adding lift straits also. Was wondering if you notice difference just by adding lift straits.

The third pontoon had lifting strakes on it when I installed it but at that point no strakes on the side toons. This was when I took the water glide off and I lost between 1-3 mph but gained front lift and all the other stuff already mentioned. When I added strakes to the side toons it gained lift but not enough speed to talk about. I would be surprised if it was 1 mph. It jumps out of the water better and all together picks up the front of the boat. I haven't had a big load in the front to see how it does, when it’s just me and my wife the boat still has plenty of front lift. I'm hoping the addition of the side strakes will perform with the additional horsepower. The way I'm looking at it is the additional horsepower would not help as much without the side strakes as what it will with them.

I'm tending to agree with you on that last statement. All new models with tri-toons and lifting straits have 150hp or better, usually the better. I would really like to know how well the 150 hp performs for you.

My toon was built at the factory with just two toons.
The dealer added on the third toon.

The manufacturer sent me a new data plate for having the third toon, and the max HP went from something like 125 to 200, if I recall correctly.

The third toon will make your boat very steady in rough water. With lifting strakes, it might be faster. Without lifting strakes, it will definitely be slower.

I clocked it the other day at about 32 mph after I removed the fold down hard top. I was hoping for better when I built it but the motor is a 140 rated at the crankshaft rather than the prop. In reality, it's equal to a 125 in todays standards. I'm in the process of changing to a 150 as we speak but a few weeks out from hitting the water. I'll post when that's finished.

Yea thats the lake I like the best. We've got an outing there early June with a bunch of folks but I'm sure I'll make it before that. Great lake to get away. We like camping on the barge so whereever the anchor drops thats home for the night.

Incoop, we work in Sherwood which must be close to you in NLR. Like going to the river on Sunday afternoon to relax. May be a few weeks till I get my boat back together but the river in rolling a little right now anyway.

Loves me some Ouachita. We've also been known to do a Friday after work river expedition. We usually launch at the NLR ramp and cruise to the sand bar across from Murray park. In fact, it's kind of become tradition to make that the annual spring shakedown cruise. The admiral is starting to hound me about it, but the upholsterer isn't done with the boat yet. He'd better hurry or I'm going to be in big trouble.:yell: When I crossed the river this morning the river appeared to have settled down quite a bit.
