Need to know if it is ok to have this opening to access the Allen heads for the shifter open or needs to be covered

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... There should be a welch plug in that hole, to seal it water tight,......
That's the shift linkage pocket, that has to be dry,.....

On my MC1 drive it was part 19-32652 7/8" welch plug.

A ½ dollar fits nicely in there with some epoxy. Interestingly actual money is cheaper than the merc part
