The heads are the same as a gmc 4.3 pickup/van/suv of the same year.
you need 1996 and up. check that they have the vortec intake bolt pattern.
If they are very used a valve job might be a good idea.

sorry bondo, didnt know if people read the old messages so i posted the new one....the motor is torn apart, the manifold looks good so far, no water in and around the push rods and still none in the oil, i am crossing my fingers....the other head is off and appears intact....i found a head that "they" said is checked and has now cracks and does not leak.....i think i am going to try it and see if it will get me through the season and next winter pull the motor and get a new block and have valve jobs done on the heads just to be safe.......tell me what you think and thanks for the advice......

I'd take that Good head off your motor,+ Find 1 like it,... Whether it's the 1 you've found, or another,..... Take a Pair of heads to a Machine Shop,+ Have them Gone Thru.......Sharpen the valves,.. new seals,....
Bolt them on,+ Go Boating,..........

What in God's Green Earth makes you Think you Need a New Motor ?????????

Do the Head Job Now.......... Then You're Done......Go Boating,....... Have FUN...........

You Got Very Very Lucky,........ Go Enjoy It,.........

What about the camshaft? Is that different or is it the same on the boat and trucks?

You don't need antifreeze. You need to get all of the water out. I have that motor and draining it is fairly easy.

It's my opinion that antifreeze is not needed and actual a PITA to get in and out of motor.

Re: 4.3 auto vs marine heads

thanks km2......the problem is that there is no room, its a four winns 180 horizon and trying to get at the drain plugs are really tough.....i waited to long last year and now i am paying for it....i have seen that there are kits to winterize the boat with anti-freeze and like you being from minnesota, it gets cold even in the garage....hopefully that will prevent all this from happening again....all i want to do is get it on the water, now that the weather has turned nice again......

New Boater -- I took my bad 4.3L OMC Chevy heads to a Car Quest machine shop and they decided it was cheaper to replace them with remanufactured "truck" heads. The guy used the GM number stamped on the head and sold me remanufactured "truck" ones with the same number (with new valves, etc.). They cost about $120 each. Quite cheap for two new heads. PS: The engine runs fine now.
