1999 270 sundancer with 2 4.3 efi engines, 145 hours on engines, .boat stored inside, used once or twice a year due to previous owners wifes' cancer...i bought it and did the following...drained and cleaned fuel tank, syphons, lines, filters...checked fuel pump output, all good, filled with name brand premium with a quart of Star-tron fuel stabilizer....replaced plugs, wires, distributor, rotor etc timed it, replaced coil, ignition module and a couple of other of the cheaper modules on ignition...problem engine, OL-002161....after about 45 minutes of running at cruise speed of 36-3800 rpm, port engine begins backfiring out throttle....noticed port tach would begin acting up, with rpm going 500-1500 over cruise rpm, .then backfiring would begin, even though engine rpm itself was stable (as determined by sound output and stable tracking of boat)....switched fuel leads between engines with no effect....thinking tach problems were contributing to engine problems somehow, i disconnected the gray and the gray/red stripe leads from the tach send terminal, and engine ran fine....what i need to know 1) what does the gray/red stripe wire likely go to (i assume the plain gray goes to coil) and 2) will running it with those wires disconnected cause me harm and 3) does anyone repair/replace an hour meter tach that old ? boat used once in sea water, the rest of the time in fresh water, elevation 4500'....
this is my first post..., i've tried reading countless posts to try to find solution, information hits all around my problem, but not enough to answer my questions...thanks for any input...

Standard Merc wiring does not have a gray/red wire on the back of the tacho. That may be one installed by the boat builder, and for that, you'll have to track it yourself. If you have an engine sync gauge, it may run to that... Either way, running without those wires connected can't harm the engine.

welcome aboard

standard color for tach signal is grey. agree with chris, boat may have used what they had when they wired between the tach and sync gauge

plenty of gauge repair shops, however for the cost, buy a new gauge.
