i have a boat with a 4.3 engine and the drive is shot. i have a 5.0 drive with no id tag on it but i know it was from a v8. both units are late 80's. what will running this set up effect?
Ayuh,..... The V8 gear ratio will be to high, unless the V6 is runnin' a really tall prop pitch, 'n you can find a really low pitch prop for it,.....
Even then it'll be less than ideal,....
Check the gear ratio by turning the output shaft and counting revolutions of input shaft. This will let you know if it really is from a v8. Sometimes people change these without knowing what they're doing. Use new drive gear ratio compared to old to determine what prop you would need to match old setup. You might be able to find a cheap used prop on ebay to test it out.
