2010 Chaparral 186, 4.3 GL, tag says engine manufactured 2009. I can't get the boat to run over 2000 rpms under load. Out of gear, I can rev it up all the way. Plugs were new last year, put in new cap and rotor yesterday and didn't resolve the issue. Any advice is appreciated!

Howdy

Tell us more about the boat. Is this new to you boat and has it ever run good?

I bought the boat when it had 88 hours on it. Currently sitting at 280 hours. Never had a problem with it. It does sit on a trailer during winter. I go to put in this year and it acts up.

Right now I'm leaning toward fuel. Take the fuel filter off and see if its full, then dump the contents into a clear container or baggie. See if there is anything by clean gas,

If that's good, need to find out what your fuel pressure is. To do this you need to get a gauge on the fuel line going to the carb. Pressure should be between 4-7 psi so get a vacuum fuel pump gauge ($20) and Tee it into the fuel line.

Thanks AllDodge, I'll start with that. Fuel pressure gauge available at some place like Autozone or Advance Auto?

Yes, or even harbor freight, just google "vacuum fuel pump gauge" it will show several. The issue is getting the fittings to fit the pump to carb with a Tee.

You could order one of these which fits between the fuel line and carb. Might have one at AZ

don't forget the anti siphon valve on the gas tank where the fuel line connects, if it corrodes internally it can cause exactly this problem

Will check that as well. Does anyone happen to know the threads on that particular tee to use on the fuel line?

Since its low pressure you should be able to remove the gas line and install a fitting like this one (local auto store, can be straight or curved)

Then use some rubber fuel line and the same size barbed Tee. (Can be brass or plastic)

The fitting in my previous post is Merc part number 91-18078, and believe the fitting size would be 3/8 inverted flare, but may also be 5/16 inverted flare.

Thanks for the info AlDodge. I need to check the pressure before diving into the carb although I think it is feeding enough pressure. It definitely smells like it is running rich. Choke doesn't seem to be sticking, maybe the float?

If float is sinking, it could cause it to run rich, but the issue is you cannot get over 2K rpms. If it was running rich it could get over 2K. It might even be that you blew a head gasket, or not running on all cylinders. Could run a compression test

really sounds like water in the fuel, like suggested pull fuel water separator, dump into glass jar. look for separation.

Well, I've been out of state for over a week and this has been bugging the crap out of me not being able to troubleshoot it. My coworker has a 4.3 Mercruiser, same Chevy 4.3 that displayed the same symptoms and it was the coil. My coil was a ball of rust so it was replaced. So, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil are new. Nothing changed performance wise. Fabbed up a couple of test hoses to use with gauge. Between the tank and the fuel pump/filter assembly, I am getting around 1 Hg at idle. Fuel line pinched off, around 3 Hg. Maybe pickup obstruction or bad pump? Didn't get a chance to test between fuel pump and carb as I ran out of daylight. Trying to figure out how to get the pickup tube out of the tank which is a Moeller plastic tank and the tank flexes bad with torque applied to the fitting. If it ends up being the pump, is there any tips to clean it out? Seems like minimal hours on an electric fuel pump. BTW, the ASV appeared to be good, no corrosion internally and the ball and spring move freely.

If the pump isn't pumping because of crud in it, then it may be able to be cleaned, otherwise no
