4.3 mec, 1989 larson manuals and repair

OK here goes I just got a 1989 Larson with a 4.3 alpha one , water in the oil so I figure I need to pull the engine will pull the intakes and the heads first to make sure its not a gasket or cracked head but a planning on it being worse then that ,
1= need a recommendation for a good manual for the rebuild of the engine 2= a manual for the Larson boat and the removal of the engine it is a 1989 Larson laser BR plus any one out there have a good used 4.3 for sale for this year?

I don't know about a manual for rebuilding the engine, but if you post your engine and outdrive serial numbers, I'm sure someone will be able to point you to the online Mercruiser manuals. They have instructions for removal of the outdrive and engine.

If you go to the Adults only section you will be able to find answers to most questions. Here is a link to find manuals to your engine and drive, looks like manual 6 and 7

Rebuilding the 4.3 is as easy as it gets! You can have the engine out in an hour or so.

followed the link to boat info and it looks like that is the info I will need , thanks . will keep posting as to what I find and how it goes . I am sure I'am going to need more info as the project progress

Well as suspected removed intake manifold on port side of engine and low and behold a 4" crack in the block /////*&^%#$*&*^ darn .
In the valve alley area. So I guess I will be pulling the engine out and looking for a new or used block. I'm going to try and get some picture and post just for information purposes .

well got the engine out . inspected the hull every thing looks good there so that is a plus . now just have to decide what I'm going to do now,short block or long block ,leaning towards a long block not that much difference in price. by the time i add in getting my heads check , new gaskets and maybe a valve job . would like some input on best place to get a re manufactured engine would like to find one locally if I can I live in south east Pa. [ Nottingham Pa.19362 ]right on the border with Pa., MD. and Del. I anyone knows of some place near here....... Thanks racetrack

Sorry, to hear about your cracked block. There are a few places you may want to try. Newport Marine in Glenolden Pa, on Oak Lane (delaware county) also Belks Marine in Ridley township right on macdade blvd also in delco . They 2 are only 2-3 miles from each other the other is in old Newcastle on Rt 9 in Delaware I can't remember their name though and I'm sure there are a few in Md not too far from you as the Chesapeake is almost in your back yard. A google search should help you . I have seen that (www.usengine.us) guarantees 50 horsepower more and 25% better fuel economy out of their remanufactured 4.3 engines.plus 7 year 500 hr warranty. I have a 190hp 4.3 and when it goes I'm thinking an extra 50 hp will put it right there with a v8. Just my opinion
By the way I like your scaffolding idea for making an engine hoist.

Thanks fen-isl but Iam looking for a re-builder not a dealer seems like all the re-builders or re-manufacturers are in the south or out west some place have to do a little more looking , and want to check on some more re-manufacturers. I could order one at the marina that I use but just want to cut out the middle man and go straight to the shop that dose the re-manufacture .
I used a pipe style scaffold with a couple of 4x4's across the top made it wide enough to pull the trailer and boat out from under it to pull the engine .

Sorry about that If i were you give Mardinly.com a call they are located in broomall pa just off the blue route and rt3 they rebuild all types of engines including marine. you may also try Churches auto parts in Ridley park (610)461-5550 they have a off site machine shop that does all types of engine machining and rebuilding I may have a old 4.3 engine block that may work for you it needs total rebuild has lots of blow by its out of a blazer so it would need to be marinized its non vortec. Its been sitting under my deck for 6 months waiting to go to scrap yard. Also give newport marine a call they maybe able to give you some other local rebuilders they are really nice there cant hurt to call and ask. (610)237-1984
Also im sure the engine builders on the web would ship it to your door for a few hundred bucks!!

Looked up Mardinly on the web very nice site sent them an e-mail so have to see how it goes .
just trying to find someone close by that I can deal with if I have a problem after the installation, better to deal locale so you can see them face to face and not have to ship the engine back to them at your cost of a few hundred $$$

could you check and see what the casting #is on the block that you have. it is on the back of engine 8 # 's . I would be interested if it is the same as mine . My mine is a 1989 thanks

Hey Racetrac the number on that old block is 10224535 I believe its a 1993 don't know if it will work for you or not Some of these guys maybe able to chime in like Bondo or Achris and know more. If you think it will work send me a pm and we can talk , I can also send you pictures. I'm in Delco. Its a balanced shaft mtr but not the newer gen+ type which is in my boat.

I found the following
All of the 10224534 and 10224535 blocks have the two strut bosses and 10 holes for the front cover, so they will fit everything in ’93 and ’94

mine is 10105867 1989 has a 12 bolt intake an 3 mounting taped holes on the front and rear of the heads , I don't think yours is the same .the re-builder wants the exact same casting . thanks for checking

going to go with the guys at mardinly , they were very helpful , cost a little more but are only 40 min away so I can pick up the engine myself [ no shipping ] and they are close enough if I HAVE A PROBLEM i CAN GET IT BACK TO THEM WITH OUT SHIPPING ,
will keep you all posted on the project
