4.3 merc efi, do i have p/s or manual?

Hi guys


Just about to get the boat ready for taking her out, went to fire her up today (routinely do so every month) and all was good except for steering which was completely stuck.

I don't recall if i tested the steering last month but 2 months ago i did and it was fine.

I've never had a prob with steering so am learning now hehe


I know i need to see if it's the cable, most likely, but what struck me when looking at the manual is that there seems to be something missing. In the manual the power steering fluid resevoir seems to be connected to the serpentine, mine doesn't have that there, does that mean that i have manual steering or is my steering fluid located elsewhere?

Your power steering reservoir and pump are on the right side of your pic (port side of boat). Big pulley, aligned with oil filter.

ahh, thanks QC,

i had got confused thinking that reservoir (with the black cap) was coolant as i'd seen it in other diagrams labelled as coolant. My manual's diagram is like this

which has the reservoir at the top and also the same reservoir on the left of the pic as i my steering fluid res.

The small bottle on the front of the motor is quite possibly drive oil. If its black, very dark in color its probably oil. The steering pump is below that. Looks like the fill cap is sort of between a hose and the engine block.

The cap was indeed between that pipe and the motor, funny i'd never noticed it there before!

just remember, when you pull the cap off there is a dipstick on the bottom and the fluid should be at the bottom of the stick were it says cold max.
do not over fill.
