4.3 Mercruiser Power problem!

I have a 1988 invader that has a 4.3 Merc ruiser engine and his carbureted it runs smooth can you put in neutral and it revs out 4500 no problem but when you go in the water try to take off in the water you can't get out of the hole and plane! I have wide open and it is still running smooth but only stayed about 3,000 RPM and that's all it can do. Some times it will get up and go. Then you slow down then it can't get going a gain!

Lets start with the motor serial number?
Also is this a new to you boat, or has the problem just started?

Can be many things, most of these are fuel issue or low compression

It has a 2bb carburetor

Well, tune up, fuel delivery, compression, are the first things that come to mind

Have you inspected anything aside from runability?

And stop reving it to 4500 rpm with no load.
