I have low compression on cyl #4 on my 3.7 litre 485. Thinking of either a rebuild of the 485 or replacing it with a 4.3. I know the 3.7 has a front mount while the 4.3 is side mount. Question is how wide apart are the motor mounts on the 4.3??? The Grady White tournament 223 has two parallel stringers 28" apart outside to outside that possibly could be used. Would prefer a 4.3 but really don't want to get involved with any stringer fabrication in which case I'd go with the rebuild.

I agree there will undoubtably be some sort of extra work involved. If however, the stringers that are installed from the factory can be utilized, then 4.3 might be the way to go. So if I can get the 4.3 motor mount width then the decision will be easier to make.

I just did this,I mounted transom assembly and mounted motor in place, used alinement tool to adj. motor angle close as possiable.I marked stringer a 1/2 inch lower than needed to shim.Build box's with many layer's of plywood, level and fiberglassed in.
Its better to be lower on your mount so u can shim if neede,to high and if would be difficult.
