So does the MPI indicate fuel injection? As is Multiport FI ? I thought I read somewhere that the 4.3MPI took special graphite embedded head gaskets, that you do not spray before installing. All others are sprayed (hi tack - or what ever is spec'd).

Does a carburetor engine really take a different gasket? My old gaskets were DEFINITELY graphite type, and mine is a 2bbl engine.

Graphite gaskets are installed dry. Ribbed stainless gaskets get a very thin coat of quicksilver perfect seal on both sides of the gasket. This is per the mercruiser service manual.
