4.3gl 1999 ran out of gas

:confused:New to I/O, HAVE 1999 MONTEREY 180 W/4.3GL VOLVO PENTA 2BBL GAS
JUST BOUGHT IT..
WAS OUT FISHING AND HEADED BACK TO DOCK WHEN IT DIED..GAUGE READ 1/4 TANK....HAVE SINCE FIXED FUEL GAUGE ISSUE..
PROBLEM NOW IT WON'T START.....
PUT 12 GALLONS OF GAS IN AND MY BUDDY BURNT UP THE STARTER TRYING TO CRANK IT....
NEW STARTER,
REPLACED FUEL FILTER AND FILLED IT WITH FUEL..WILL CRANK AND START IF I POUR A SMALL AMOUNT OF FUEL INTO CARB...BUT THEN DIES AND WILLNOT START UNLESS I POUR MORE FUEL INTO CARB,THEN IT STARTS AND DIES...
HOW CAN I TELL IF ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP IS WORKING?
UNHOOKED FUEL LINE AT CARB AND PLACED INTO JAR AND CRANKED ENGINE...GOT MAYBE A TABLESPOON OF FUEL....
SHOULD FUEL PUMP MAKE A NOISE? RELAY IS GOOD....

First, turn "caps lock" off. On the internet, caps denote that a person is yelling.

You may have sucked some garbage from the bottom of the fuel tank into the carb. Your gonna have to clean that carb out...is my guess.

In the future, if your motor isn't starting after some reasonable cranking....look for problems rather than continuously cranking the starter hoping that it will start.

my 4.3 was completely drained of gas for a year and hadn't been started. I would pour gas into the carb and give it a little throttle (enough to get it up to about a 1500 rpm idle) and kept turning it over. It would fire off and die after a few seconds. I did this for over an hour until it finally primed and then it fired up and ran. Try to keep doing this, pour, throttle, crank, and repeat. It will eventually pump gas into the carb and start running, but it takes a while. Just don't lay on the starter forever and don't let the starter get hot

Might help to fill a spray bottle with premix....and keep spraying it in the carb to keep it running until it primes itself.

thanks, learned about cranking the starter the hard (dollar) way.
will keep trying in the am

Relay checked out ok...had voltage to fuel pump when starting...unhooked fuel line to carb,cranked engine no fuel flow from fuel pump.
unhooked fuel line from fuel filter and could not get any fuel from tank using a manual suction pump....
hooked clear fuel tube to fuel filter and placed in a gallon gas can, would not suck fuel from gas can, ie....
anti-siphon valve stuck ( may have sucked up trash when it ran out of fuel) fuel pump bad..
ordered new fuel pump and anti-siphon valve....should have by friday....will repost then and hopefully i can post that the monterey is ready for the water again....

Might want to remove the fuel pickup tube in the tank, there is a screen on the bottom of the pickup that could also be plugged up.

replaced fuel pump and anti-siphon valve, took a few times of adding fuel to carb to get her to crank....but she's up and running again..
going fishing in the am...Thanks to all for the help.....YEA!!!!I'm on the water again fishing.....:)
