i would not modify a stock merc, i would look into another motor built for the performance you want.

I have an '05 Tahoe 190hp F/S and have seen 53mph on the speedo with 2 people and Smart Tabs. Haven't checked with GPS. I also had the trolling motor and deep cycle battery on board. 50mph +/- depending on load should be close.

I don't know if it's the same with Mercruiser, but the Volvo Penta 4.3's are rated at 190 with a 2bbl and 215 with a 4bbl. If you have a 2bbl, upgrading the manifold and carb wouldn't be too tough. Then again, 50+ mph is pretty good...

I own an '06 Searay 185 sport with the 4.3l 190hp Mercruiser. My speedo shows 53mph at wot, 4700 RPM, but on my GPS it is actually 50.2mph and sometimes 51mph. Beware the speedo.

Re: 4.3l Merc IB/OB...Performance upgrades!

I built a performance 4.3L V6.
I have it on a '94 bayliner Capri 1850LS Bowrider.
I can pull 57 mph at 4800-5000 rpm with just me in it on flat water. I have a 1.8:1 ratio Alpha 1 gen 2 and turn a 23 pitch, 13 3/4 inch dia 4 blade stainless Ballistic Prop. I can still pull skiers with this setup.
I installed Speed Pro high compression pistons, an Edlebrock performer camshaft, intake porting, and fresh valve job, and a Weber (Carter) 4 barrel. My estimated compression ratio is 9.6:1. I can run 87 octane w/o detonation. I run on par with my buddies 2003 Glastron 195 SX with the 5L V8. My stock HP was rated at 205HP. I figure the cam is worth 15 hp and higher compression pistons worth maybe 10. I have not dynoed it but I figure around the 230 range is a conservative estimate.
Here is a brief and incomplete site about it.
http://users.adelphia.net/~chrisradvanyi/

Here is an article Hot Rod magazine did about the 262 V6.
http://hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/113_0208_v6/
