I have a 1990 4.3L OMC Cobra....motor idles and revs fine in nuetral. When put in forward or reverse, it sputters and then dies. If you can shift it fast and give it enough gas, then it stays runnin'. I also have a problem with not having the power it should. When at full throttle, the boat moves at a little more than idle speed, and rpm's don't go over 2500. I've already replaced plugs, condensor, points, rotor, and adjusted the timing....what's next?

How old is your fuel?

If old, get it out and refill with fresh, change fuel filter.

Is the engine "missing" badly

I had the same problem last year and i also have a 4.3l omc cobra,, it turned out to be the shift interrupter on the top of the engine in the shifting linkage, idled great and reved up great but when i put it in gear it sputtered and had no power at all, i will bet you will find out this could very well be your problem,,, have a great day!!

sunbird 89, i just replaced the interrupter switch and it cured the problem. the switch is on the linkage on top of the engine its a little black switch that rides in the notches on the linkage and when you put your boat in gear it makes the engine flutter so that it goes in gear easier...
