I don't care what the pros think, I still learned something from your thread. Thats why I'm on this site. Learn and share experience.

Re: 4 cyl plug wires

AQ130D 4 cylinder. Sierra doesn't make plug wires for this motor anymore. The closest I can see is to use the wires for the newer overhead cam motors (125, 131, etc.). The asking price is $107 for a set. When I look at plug wire sets for 6 and 8 cylinder motors, the price is 1/3 to 1/2 the price. I intend to go with a coil with internal resistance and the electronic conversion kit. Since I'm getting rid of the ballast resistor, can I now use the less expensive plug wire sets or is there something more to the quality of wires required by a 4 cylinder engine?

Thanks for any insight.

just so happens I'm researching the same topic sort of. I want to replace the points w/ new electronic ignition from Mallory...
Some things I found (or believe at this time)
1) You need 6-9 volts going to the coil while running. 12 v to the coil for easier starting due to voltage drop from the starter load. You need the ballast resister here. Not sure what the internally resisted coils add or subtract to this though.
Next for some reason running straight wires (non-resistive) is a no no to the electronic module (why, I don't know)...
I'm going to try these till someone says no:

I assume they have the stainless steel ends (but wouldn't be surprised if not) They are more expensive then "straight" wires (usually) but currently only a dollar different.

I'm going to stick with the Volvo recommendations because of the heat shield. Have no idea why they need a heat shield but it's easy enough to stay with something near what the manufacturer recommends. I'm not sure about the resistance requirements for any particular setup but pretty sure that the earth won't tilt on it's axis or the sun turn into a black hole if I use different plug wires.

Here check these out, Overtons has them at $25 for a 3.0 4cyl elect ign;
http://www.wiretec-ignition.com/prod04.htm

By the way, I've used something like this, on all my vehicles for years! ;)

I have those wires currently. I WAS planning on replaceing them due to worry over the fact that the aftermarket ignition conversion says not to use SS or copper straight wires. Which I thought they were. I'll have to double check but according to this, this should not be an issue:

"They work with any
original equipment or aftermarket ignition
system.
MagStar? Marine Wire"

I seem to have some other issues though... like why do I have a constant 12v's at my ignition coil with or without the key in run? and why do I not have a voltage drop at the coil?
