After rebuilding my Mercarb and doing a complete tuneup my 1988 3.0 mercruiser. It has started fouling out my spark plugs after 4 hours of running. The plugs are solid black so I know that it is running rich, I also used 3/4 tank of gas during my 4 hour venture. Anybody know whats going on with this thing?

What is your fuel pressure? And that rich is not a screw adjustment.

You screwed something up in the carb. Here are things to check: 1) float level, 2) inlet needle and seat function, 3) check ball fell out and was not replaced (some have it some don't) 4) choke misadjusted (high probability) and 5) Choke pull off not functional, not connected, or misadjusted. NEVER attempt to adjust the choke or any of its related linkage on a warm engine.

I have pulled the carb 2x's and have reset the float level. I have put the float in gas for several days to see if it was cracked and filling with fuel, it was ok. I have reset the choke while cold at a setting of 2mm like the rebuild kit says. I've noticed while running that the choke never fully opens even At full throttle. This engine has always used alot more gas than I think that it should. I guess Il break it down again and see if I find something that I missed. Thanks

Hmmmm, methinks you've stumbled on to something here. Before you tear into it again, I would dial the choke all the way off and go run it. If your plugs don't foul and the engine runs better, you can deal with the choke without tearing it all apart again.

By golly -- if the choke never opens up fully you have only one cause. the choke stove is not working.

Or if this carb has an electric choke, that choke stove ain't workin'. Either way, the choke needs heat to open fully. No heat -- the stove ain't workin'

Ayuh,.........

I Think the Choke Stove is that little cavity in the manifold that the Choke Flue comes Out of........

Other times the Spring sits in the Choke Stove,+ a rod controls the Choke.......
It's a Much Healthier set up,............ No Flu...............:D

Btw,........ I Think your Carb Problems are Much Deeper than a Stuck Choke.........

Finally over the choke flu but still having one plug foul out and boat sputters at 3/4 throttle unless you feather throttle or adjust trim. Its still using more gas than I think it should(it always has). What is the average price of letting a shop rebuild my carb?
