Hello, I'm new to this, but i'm having trouble with my 86' 4hp motor. It will only idle at 1/2 choke; the choke has to be all the way off in order to run at full throttle; and it will only start on full choke. The plug looks as though it is fouled. What should I do? Is there a cleaner I can put in the gas, or how do I know if I need to rebuild the carb?

Howdy, TM.

Do you have a low speed mixture adjustment? If so back it out about a turn, then turn it in enough to get your engine to idle smoothly without choke after it is warmed up.

If you have no adjustment of low speed mixture, you need to clean the jets in your carb.

Get a manual before you start.

Good luck. :)

Thanks Jb, Is it very hard to do and roughly how much should it cost? Any idea at all?

With a manual it is a little scary the first time. After that it is a snap.

Good luck. :)
