Is a 15 hp 4 stroke OB a better motor for trolling (fishing) than a 2 strokes ? What's the advantage if any ?
I have read that they "make oil" when trolling for long period of time ... what does this mean ?

Re: 4 strokes OB for trolling

I have always had 2 stroke Mercs. I have never had one that liked idling all day. Right now I use a 35 for crabbing. It idles for hours on end. I have to keep her in perfect condition to do this and every hour or two I open it up to clear out the cobwebs. Every Merc I've ever had prefers to scream down the river. Occassionally, my neighbor and I will use his boat with a 150 4 stroke Yammy - no problems.

I used a 1976 Evinrude 9.9 and ?? Johnson SailMaster 9.9 for many years trolling for salmon and lake fishing. We were at a boat show in 1997 and the Honda dealer had a 15 HP set up in a tank, as soon as my wife heard it run and stood behind it, her first words, buy it, I am tired of the noise and smoke of your old motor. I had used the Honda up until this week, when I went with a Yamaha T9.9 High Thrust. I never has a lick of trouble w/Honda. But then again, I changed the oil about every 3-4 months, hey what's a quart of oil.
It is hard to tell in the Yamaha is running at idle.
I think the trick to avoid making oil is running a hotter thermostat, proper break in and then before you come home, run the engine at 3/4 throttle for a few minutes to warm up the engine and get rid of an moisture in the oil, if there is any.

i like 4 trokes because of the quietness. but that being said a 2 stroke 9.9 or 15hp johnnyrude from the eighties and nineties are pretty quiet at trolling speed and for me have always trolled all day without a problem. for me because of the simplicity and lower weight i would go 2 stoke in that sized engine.

Any of the 15hp or less new or old OB's will troll all day every day with no issues, if it won't it has problems.

There is no comparison between the 2S and 4S when it comes to the sound level when trolling, like g036 said, you can hardly tell if a new 4S is running.
