just wondering how good is 40 force motor?and how hard is it to replace a stator and set the timing back?the flywheel has already been pulled and do not know if it's sitting in the same spot it was pulled from.thanks

Re: 40 force

The flywheel is located by a key in the shaft. Stator replacement is only about 4 bolts which you should see on top. Be certain to torque the flywheel nut otherwise you may shear the key when you start it. Ask the dealer the correct torque--it should be somewhere around 85-90 foot pounds, but I am not certain on that engine.

Re: 40 force

thanks alot for the reply,i just bought this boat and really want to get it running.i know the stator going to run around 250.00 but i hope it's still a good investment,so your saying with it being keyed it should be easy to put in time? The man I bought it from said it would fire on the low side but not high side, does this sound like the stator?is there a way to ckeck the stator?thanks alot..

Re: 40 force

If you are getting spark on one cylinder, then most likely the stator is good. There is only one winding on the stator that charges both sides of the CD box. Before replacing the stator, check the CD box and the coils. It is either the CD box, trigger, or the coil. Reverse the coil connections from the CD box. If the other plug is dead now, then it is the coil. If the same plug is dead, then it is either the trigger or CD box.

(I think I got the logic correct)

Re: 40 force

so if it will crank and run at low speed it's not the stator and is probably the coil?I will check and see if it is firing all cylinders.thanks

Re: 40 force

perhaps I misunderstood you: I though you meant it was firing on one cylinder only. Did the mechanic mean that at low speed it was firing and at high it was breaking up?

Again, this could be the CD box but it also could be the stator. I don't know of any way to dynamically test the stator at high speed in this situation. However, if it is only breaking up at high speed on one plug, then it is a safe bet that the stator is OK.

You can test that by clamping an inductive timing light on each plug wire and watching it flash. If it is not steady on only one wire, then there is your problem--that coil or CD box.

Re: 40 force

According to the CLYMER manual, flywheel torque for a 40 HP is as follows:

Prior to 1995 80 FT-LB

1995 - 1999 125 FT-LB
