40 hp Evinrude - lower unit removal

I have a 1964 40 hp Evinrude Big Twin Model #40453S / Serial #E02622. I am trying to remove the lower unit but if won’t drop down. I have disconnected the shift linkage but the drive shaft won’t seem to come loose.<br />The pinion gear on the lower end is rusted to the shaft.<br /><br />Any suggestions on how to remove this lower unit?<br /><br />Thanks<br />bill

It sounds like the drive shaft is stuck in the crank, some times you have to pull the drive shaft key thru the pump housing to get the unit down, you may wind up with a parts motor even if you don't want one
