New problem haven't encountered before, just purchased boat with 40hp evinrude, started with muffs first time, starts, runs great. no water ever came out of hose , "pee" hose. Yet water was circulating , came out lower hole above lower unit in front, motor never got warm, ran for a few minutes and stayed really cool. I've replaced water pumps, but never seen a motor run cool if pump wasn't working. I checked hose and it's not stopped up. Any suggestions?

If you are confident it is cooling ok, then the hose or fitting must be plugged up. Can you blow back through the hose? The water reaches the pee hose fitting BEFORE going through the powerhead.

BTW, just for whatever it's worth, I've preached many times that you cannot test a water pump by running on muffs.

^^^^---Applause more applause on above post.----Water coming out the tell tale does not go through the engine.----It tells you that water pump is working.----It does not tell you that motor is cooling properly.----Next step for you is to test the overheat horn !!

Incoming hose water is probably about 40F. Put it in a barrel if testing in the driveway -- water level well up the shaft. Grab an infrared tester somewhere and check the temp on the top of the powerhead that way.

Should replace the water pump impeller if you don't know when it was replaced. Muffs push water up with hose pressure, so doesn't test the pump -- and if incoming water is super cold anyway, doesn't indicate much about engine operating temp. either. But it can help to flush out the system.

Run a piece of weed whacker line up into the pee hole (spiders, mud daubers, etc.)

yea I actually prefer a large trash can of water, the problem here is the motor has a, don't pick at me cause I don't now the proper name, but a fin to help to plane, and would not fit into the trash can. This is not just a boat I purchased but from a long time friend I can TOTALLY TRUST. He said was out 2 weeks ago and did fine.

I guess I really just freaked out when the motor was not "peeing" being my old boat had a problem I fought over and over until it was resolved. That motor would not pee and would heat up fast. I replaced pump, impeller twice, thermostat, and to be honest don't know what finally worked but one day started peeing and cooling fine. I and a neighbor worked off and on for a month, so really seeing no water out of pee hose was a big concern.

Don't like 'em (pee hoses/tell tales). More trouble than they are worth, imo. If water is coming out of the hole(s) on the back of the leg, the head is getting water. Check the top of the powerhead for overheating. An IR gun is very useful -- should see somewhere between 120f and 140F or thereabouts. Over 160 is too hot (and will burn the heel of your hand, if testing that way.

If potential overheating is a concern for your bud too, he should probably install a temp gauge (works off a sender mounted on the powerhead). Old style, but can still be found. Main thing is to change out the impeller every other year or so -- more if in silty water, like river running.
