Hydraulic Cylinder for manual lift fails to lift engine without extreme pull after about 2 years. last time i replace cylinder is was about $200.00. Is there an adjustment i can make or what would happen if i just drain the oil out of the lift cylinder.

Take a look at the last couple of postings on ShawnQ's thread. It sounds like you need some lubrication, and maybe some loosening of the nuts at the pivot point. Beyond that, you might consider one of those assist handles that give you additional leverage for manual tilting. I used one on my old 85 Evinrude, and it worked well.

Re: 40 hp Evinrude with manual lift

Hi Oldcrow
These manual tilt assists are a pain. I also have one on a 1990 40hp. You have to pull your guts out when they don't work. Mine is also not working. I have been told that they are not repairable. Im also not real sure exactly how they work. It would seem to me if you disabled yours by drilling a hole in it, you would have no way of locking the motor down for reverse. A 40hp might get to be a hand full in this situation with no lock. I'll give this idea some thought. I darn sure ain't going to buy another one of these pieces-o-junk. You may have to resort to finding a scraper and salvage the normal parts for reg. manual tilt. There hasn't been much covered on this subject here on this board. So if you come up with a dandy solution, please keep us informed. I would love to tear mine apart to see what causes it to fail. Trouble is I don't want to disable my hole motor. I have a jet so I don't have to use tilt that much.

yeah, tell me about it, I run twin 1990 40hp rudes and both units are shot. As you mention I almost tear sphyncster valve while tilting the motors when in the boat. When I reverse they do tend to kick back, not too serious if you go slower. I've had to disable the locking mechanism anyway as I launch through the surf and on return through the surf, beach the boat as high as I can, ie. run up at full speed. To have the motors locked then would rip my transom off the boat.

Even the guys with auto trim and tilt do a mod in order to not lock the motors in place.

motor mechanic today i adjust the cable to its shortest position that i can clip it back on the lever. will try & let you know. i think it is a hyd.cyl.with a normally closed valve and if u rememberwhen the motor (newer) was sometimes difficult to push down. so when you pushed it down the valve opened and the oil moved to the bottom of the piston...when it get hard to lift we have oil on both sides of the piston and not transfering from one side to the other, therefore a lot of resistance.if the cable adjustment doesn't work, i will drain the oil - cant be worse - and let u know

oldcrow,

Thanx. $400 x2 is a bit rough for my liking seeing the motors are now 13 yo. Theyve still got plenty life left in them so I'll just have to break my back to lift them everytime!

Re: 40 hp Evinrude with manual lift

well the cylinder is pretty easily overhauled. all parts were readily available. this one had a broken ceramic seat in the valve. we put it in a lathe and reshaped it to a cone. Plugs are locktited and can more easily removed with a lot of heat. need a 13mm allen wrench bored out to 10mm for about 1.5" to remove valve. big problem is bleeding. tuff to hold valve open, stroke cylinder, bleed air and refill- all by hand. put it back on motor and it is still spongy (air). got to find a way to bleed it and resupply oil while mounted on engine so the engine can be used to stroke cylinder. need a pressure relief valve on top plug that will close when cylinder stops and not let more air in. right now we are about 50% back to the way it was intended to work and I can use it ; it locks down just fine for reverse.

Try it; it an interesting project.

Movie and 10 ;)
