I just bought a 15' Sylvan bassboat with a 1985? 40 hp Evinrude outboard, Model Number E40ELCD. I checked the plugs due to just a little rough idle and they looked burned so I went to the parts place and was crossed referenced from Champion QL77JC44 to Autolite 2634. Yesterday while out on the lake the engine wanted to bog down when I tried to go full throttle after running great all day. I limped on in to shore and got it home and took the plugs out. They were fouled and glossy looking. Could someone tell me the "correct" plugs for this engine?

Champion QL77JC44. Don't let the doggone parts people give you anything else. I've had that happen before also. If you do a search for "bog 40" you'll get more info than you wanted on that topic. Get a factory repair manuel - it's well worth it.

Have fun!

Hey, Thanks, fish!!! I guess they jsut wanted to make a sale, huh? Also, let me ask this. As I said, the motor ran fine all day until we got into some choppy water. I had 3 people in the boat including myself and normally 2 would have to be in hte front for me to plane out. On this occasion one stayed in the back with me. The motor tried on it's own to reach plane out speed but never made it. Could this be what fouled these brand new plugs out> And short of a wire brush is there anything I can soak them in to remove the gloss?

Replace the plugs. If you wire brush them, they will collect gunk on the next run. Plus you'll change the gap.
New Plugs. Only a couple of bucks and put a couple extra in your tool box.
Jake.

NGK spark plugs aren't the preferred plugs? I am a merc guy and NGK is the only way to go. Just wondering?

Thanks-
Andy
