40 Hp Gale sovereign Unknown Year

Hello, I recently recieved a homemade pontoon boat from my uncle and it came with a 40 hp gale sovereign outboard. he told me he hasnt started it in almost 10 years. I am asking of the iboats community for information on how to start this engine and how to check it out beforehand. it turns over nice. I havent tried starting it because i dont want to mess it up if someting is not right. Any help is Appreciated. Thank You... JDL

That is a close cousin the the Evinrude/Johnson motors of similar years.
Look in the "top secret file" at the top of the E/J forum.Waking a sleeping out board.
These are rugged simple reasonably powerful motors.
The Gale 40 was built in 61,62 and 63. 63 was the last year for any Gale production.

You will find the reprint factory parts and service manuals very useful. Gale numbers are the same as E/J
For most parts except cosmetic. There are still lots of routine new parts still available. And there are many new and used parts
vendors on the net.Some list what various parts fit.
