40 hp Johnson outboard 1966

I have a 1966 40 hp Johnson outboard motor and the problem I have is that the motor will not shift into either reverse or foward. The motor seems to run fine and the prop is spinning. The shifter seems to be working fine, but it will not engage in either reverse or forward. The shaft is spinning but the prop will not engage.

If the propeller shaft turns but the propeller doesn't, you need to replace the shear pin between the propeller and the propeller shaft. This pin is designed to break when you hit something with the propeller spinning. Take off the propeller and all will be clear.<br />If you were running the engine without water, then you need to replace the water pump impeller. If you were turning it over by hand, it's fine.

This was my first time on the internet. I made a mistake by putting this in the General Outboard Discussions (non-repair topics). Thanks for the help it was the Shear Pin.
