2000 40 HP Merc runs well at all speeds, but stalls when line and bulb empty. Sediment bowl\filter still full of fuel when this happens. If I connect a vacuum gauge in line with the fuel pump, what sdhould it read? Could fuel pump be bad already? Engine has less than 20 hours on it and has been winterized by pros. Any thoughts?

Howdy, Rango.

Engine sounds a bit young to have a weak fuel pump, but you just might need the quicker pulsations from the crankcase to get it to work. That would most likely be an air leak.

Really more likely is gummed up low speed jet(s) in one or both carbs.

Last thing I suspect is linkage and synchronization adjustment. Your idle may be too slow now that she is broken in and loosened up a bit.

Good luck. :)

Just for kicks could this be an idle mixture adjustment problem? If it is hard to start, does choking it help? Could it be too rich?
