I have a 1994 Merc 40 hp 2 stroke on my fishing boat. The problem is, when going to accelerate from idle, it boggs and then stalls. Also if running at idle, no load, it will suddenly surge upto 1500 - 1800 rpms for several seconds and then drop down to idle, it will keep repeating this. Also if I try and troll at idle speed then it will not surge, but I cannot get it to troll at say 1200 rpm, it will for a while and then drop down to 700 - 800 rpm. It runs great at higher rpm's.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what can be causing this problem. It has been suggested that it can be the crankshaft seals, or the carb. I would like to get my plan of attack figured out before I start ripping it apart. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
