Sup yammie guys. I have always fooled with mercs and rudes but I am looking at a late 80's Yamaha 40 hp with tilt trim and controls. Has been fully serviced and has paperwork to prove it. He wants $1000 firm for it. What do you fellas think?

I think that is too much for a 30 year old outboard, but I have no idea what is a fair price.

Well to be fair it is more like 25 years old. But to be honest with you it seems to be a decent price (considering it has a shop record with it) for my area. I just want something reliable, decent on gas, and powertrim. I sold my '67 merc650 for $700 so I'm not too concerned about popping on the extra $300. Plus the merc didn't have a thermostat so I had some cold weather issues.

$1000 is not out of line but id do a compression check and maybe a leak down test

check lower unit for water or metal and make sure the lower unit bolts can be removed so that water pump can be changed.
Nothing worse than trying to drop lower unit on a new to you motor and find out the bolts will not come out without breaking off.
Inspect under the cowling also for any signs of corrosion problems, those bolts tend to freeze up and break off when trying to remove also(stat, head, and covers)

If it's a saltwater motor then it would be much more suspect for corrosion issues...if used in a freshwater lake or river and well-maintained, then maybe go for it...After doing a real sea trial to check performance.

Man I wish I could take it out on a boat. It is on a stand. Best I get is running her on muffs.

See if you can get something in writing.

Need to make sure it will run properly under load at all RPMs, cannot do that on a stand

Those older 2-stroke, Yami 40hp, particularly the tiller models, are very sought after down here in FL for all of the flats skiffs folks use. They can draw a few grand if they're in tip-top shape. Of course, condition is everything, but Yamahas generally have a great reputation.

Cool KFA good to hear. I will post some pics of it. He has all the previous shop records on it, all maintenance done by yamaha dealership. It also has been fully repainted. He sent me pics of before and after paint and if it were my motor I would not have had it painted because it looked great.

Here's another sweet one. Btw, I'm sure I've asked before, but what type of guitar pickin' do you do? I've been playing for 20+ years myself, but that's a whole other disease aside from boats :)
