When I hit the switch to put the outdrive in the down position it goes all the way down, regardless if I let off of the switch quickly, there is no intermediate position. Going up I can stop wherever I want. Is this the way that this thing is supposed to work? Secondly, can this outdrive be tilted while engine running with drive in neutral without consequence?

I just bump the switch 1 or 2 times max. That's the way it is.

The drive is to be ALL THE WAY DOWN while running. To do otherwise will cause the ball gears to prematurely wear out. Don't even start it up in the driveway with it up.

NOPE! the ball gears are always turning, in gear or out. Never run with the drive more than 10-15% up and that only for short periods, at low throttle, to get out of shallow water jams.

You should be able to stop at any position going down or up. On mine I can stop halfway or really at any position. Not sure what would cause that though.

I agree about not running the the thing with the drive up. What about the impeller? I don't think it runs with the drive up. Could overheat.

The impeller spins at all times... just like the ball gears. With the drive up, you may not be able to suck water, thus damaging your ball gears and impeller!
