Re: 402 vs 40hp?

It is still 50:1. Prior to the 1979 model year, Mercury usually put an extra "0" to the HP rating for the model # like 50hp was a 500, 7.5hp was a 75. The 2 that were a little different were the 9.8 and the 40. The 9.8hp was a 110, and the 40 was a 402. I was told the 402 stood for 40hp, 2 cylinder, but that could be wrong. From 1979 on, the last "0" was dropped.

Hope that makes sense.

I have the 1979 402 but the wrap say 40 HP this was the year they changed over. The 40 HP before this I believe is the 40 HP 4 cyl 4 stroke

my bad was gonna correct known as a 400 was the 2 on 402 becuase it was a 40 hp 2 stroke rather just 400?or am i wrong and it could have been known as a 404. i hope not I remember back in the late 60,s i was with my dad with our 75 HP evenrude 2 stroker and when we came in a saw a mercury 1000! I was like WOW Look at that monster engine. Every scince that day I wanted a mercury outboard. That extra 0 Made it look that way. knowing they dropped the zero i was looking a t 100 HP engine that day but still seemed like a monster to me even today
