Looking for alittle help with wiring on a 1985 40etlk . Got the outboard with battery /starter cables removed and un marked . I have manual on cd but the pictures are hard to see . Iam looking to find out what the light blue ? wire is for in the picture . And also how/where the correct routing of the battery cables are . Sorry the picture are not great best i can do with camera i have .

1) The top stud on starter ( ground ) is this ran directly to battery ?

2) I got the cable on the bottom of the starter going to a solenoid , and found a loose stud on the other side of solenoid that had 2 smaller wires on it , on this stud ( circled in green ) does this go out to the battery ?

3) The light blue wire in question i was told by the owner he "thought" it went to the choke . Where does it go ?

4) What gauge /length /terminal type were the battery cables originally ? i have 4 gauge wire but it seems to thick to sit in the piece at front of motor .

Re: 40ETLK Wiring questions

Wiring Color Codes for YAMAHA Outboard Motors.
wire color chart might help

1. yes to negative on battery
2. what do you mean by a loose stud on the other side of solenoid? can you wiggle it or was the nuts just not tight?
Yes Positive battery cable goes there
3. What is that blue wire coming out of? Pic just shows a black blob with wire coming out.
If this motor has an electric choke then there has to be a switch to energize it somewhere Is this motor remote control or a tiller

4. should be a tight fit and #4 should be right for a short run, depending on how long of a run to battery

Re: 40ETLK Wiring questions

1) Thank you
2) Yes i should have said the nut on one side ( that has 2 smaller wires on the stud ,was loose ) not the stud itself that was loose .
3) Remote steering . Having a hard time getting a good picture of this as its partly tucked under the bottom coil . The wire code link you posted shows the color very close to trim up .. just odd as the other blue on the trim up motor is much darker blue ... I'll attempt a better picture .
4) Ok , length is 78 inches on the cables for now. After i mount this on boat i will measure the correct length i need when battery is mounted where i need it ect.
