Just replaced the trim motor on a 94 40hp evirude. Tried it out when done and it worked both, at the throttle and on cowling switch. Worked just great. Ran it up and down ~15 times. Went out later to do more work and now it dos not work at either throttle or cowling switch. Hooked 12 v to motor, not the problem. Am able to take the green or blue wire from the cowling switch and put 12 v to them and it goes up and down. replaced the solenoids, still doesn't work. I've ben all over the thing with the meter and can't put my finer on what's happening. Anyone help me out?

Did you check for power at the wire that feeds the trim switches?(at the throttle and cowling)

Re: 40Evinrudetrim/tilt headache

I checked the power lead (red with purple stripe) and have no voltage there. I tried to trace the wire and it goes into a cable that is then combined with other cables. I can't seem to find the origin of the red wire with the purple stripe. I assume the trim swith at the trhottle has same problem. Can't find a fuse. It's acting like that red wire w/purple stripe is grounded somewhere.

I've been travleing all week, back home now, anyone on line able to give any advice?

I've been traveling all week, back home now and can get back to the boat motor. Anyone have any advice that might help me solve this one?

Did you try to bump the key to see if the starter activates. If it doesn't you blew the fuse. If the starter works the fuse is obviously ok and there is a wiring issue.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I can start the boat, everything but the trim motor works. What is killing me is it worked, I went in the house, came back out and then it didn't work. Will need to keep the beer in the garage instead of the house from now on.

I believe that one of your switches is shot, and / or there is a wiring short along the way. Ensure a good connection at the battery and solenoids.

Ended up being both, a wire that did not have continuity plus the switch to lower the motor on the cowling being bad. Thanks for your inputs, they helped me solve the problem.

i have a 50hp johnson with the same trim/tilt as the 40. Where the square plug in things, relay... something... i forgot. you may be having a grounding isue there. I think i got a little of that goin on in my motor, bc if i tap it to the right position no response in the switches. Tap it back into the other just right spot and its back to normal. try it out.
