Took the boat out today and my battery went dead, so that must mean it's not charging when I am underway... where do I start looking for a problem at???

How do I test to see if it's even outputing any charge?

What is the model number of your engine so we can see what type of system you have. If the motor started fine and the battery went dead while you were using it there might be some other problem, need input.

Re: 40hp 1993 NOT CHARGING

Here is the serial number.

E40TLETB

I put another battery in there and the volts went up to 13.8 volts when I reved up motor. The other one stayed at 8 volts when i was running along. I think the battery is just plain dead. It was fine all morning it just went poop.. I THINK... LOL

I would like to know what to look for on the charging system if this happens again or whatever? I would like to hook up a meter to the out terminals to see what its putting out when running.

Thanks guys

I beleave you have a stator under the flywheel to charge battery. You said you had 13.8 volts when reved up, thats good. You can probably mount a volt meter in dash to watch charging system, should operate with key. As long as you see an increase from battery voltage when over about 2000 RPM you should be good to go. Sounds like your old battery is junk.

Yeah I have a meter in the dash. I charged the batter ant its holding at 12.5 vots. I think the battery shorted out because it was fine 1 minite dead the next... Does not add up. I am going to get a new one and hope that solves it.

One good thing came out of it though I learned how to start a electric start motor without a battery LOL A rope and some mygrubbering I got it started lol
