I was asking around about a good strong running 40hp motor for my 16ft deep v alum on another site, and they were saying that a certain 40hp 3cyl 2 stroke merc was the same as a 60hp, but it was restricted?? Is there any truth to that? WHat model motors is it? I am more worried about the weight of the motor, so if the 60hp weighs the same, I would look into buying it.. Thanks in advance for any help...

no. just look for a 60 hp if thats what you want, not much of a weight difference. what is the max hp rating on your boat?

I have one of those 40's and asked the same question to to a mercury tech.Yes there is a restrictor BUT,the carbs are different and the porting is different, the cost of replacing the carbs and reporting far out ways the cost of buying another motor.

I know the 40 & 50 are the same(1997 & up) with only difference being the carbs, the 55 & 60 are different block all together and only restrictor(isolator) that I know of is on the 40/50/60 4 stroke of 2002-2005

They didnt make a 3 cylinder 40hp in the 80's and the 60hp weighs 190lbs without trim where the 2 cylinder 40hp weighs 145lbs.
