i got a gently used eletramatic from a buddy, we put it on the boat, i had to hard wire the starter with a 5 prong key switch and a 3 way toggle for forward and reverse before,, we wired it we put some gas in the carb via squeeze bottle it run popped and ran till the gas was gone good,,, deal, we wired it in thru a box with a solenoid ,all set right? now we dont get any spark-turns,,,, over fine but nosparkand,, the two leads coimg off the generator are not hooked up yetmy,, bbuddy seez these two leads go to rechargeing the battery and have nothing to do with the spark could,,, the points or condenser just quit just like that? because thats the spark maker for the motor thank,,, Dave

Re: 40hp eletramatic wiring

i found a bad ground,,will this affect the shifting off the eletra shift and does it have a netraul safety switch? because i started the motor with out the shift controls hooked up and the motor started,,then when i put the 3 way toogle switch on the motor lost spark,,,is this the problem? or did i maybe burn the condenser out poosibly,,,with all the wiring i did..? thanks dave

Check the black kill switch wires. They should be isolated from one another for spark, and shorted together to run. If 12v went down one the ignition coil has fried. No problem, new ones are about $15.
Condensers are rarely a problem. If you want to pull the flywheel use only a puller that acts on the three ratchet bolt holes near the centre of the flywheel, like a harmonic balancer puller.

Only problem with a toggle switch for the shift switch is it's possibly to quickly switch from forward to reverse accidentally, which will damage the gears. Just keep it in mind and somewhere where it won't get hit.

Here are a couple schematics. The PDF is one I drew for a 28hp but it's pretty much the same as yours and I think it's clearer.

Don't worry about the generator for now, just tape off it's leads. You need a regulator for it. A car one works - not an alternator one but one for an old generator setup like on a 1960 Ford Falcon. But it's not something you just plug in and go, you have to polarize it first.

No trouble. :)

Torque the flywheel nut to 105ft/lbs to prevent the key from shearing.

When you refill the gearcase, use only OMC/BRP dealer "Premium Blend" gearcase lube. Normal outboard lube will cause the electric shift clutches to slip. "Premium Blend" is much thinner oil.

Good luck!
