40HP Evinrude compatibility question

I have a 1973 Evinrude 40 outboard (M#40304) that I have not been successful in getting to run right. I have the opportunity to buy a 1976 Evinrude 40 (M#40655-5a). The 1976 motor is a long shaft, mine is a short shaft. Can anyone tell me if my 1973 lower unit will interchange easily with the 1976? I need the short shaft for my boat. The 1976 runs fine and is available with all controls...any idea what it would be worth?

I believe the way to do that change would be to put the good power head on the short shaft motor housing. But I am not very familiar with those year motors. as long as they both have the same type (electric shift/manual shift) lower units, I belive it will work.
