I've found a 1997 40 force that needs a stator,he wants $200 for the motor, wondered what the motor is worth.it has power tilt trim.im going to check compression on the motor this week.i have a 94 or 95 and wondered if the powerhead would swap from the 97 to the 94 or vise versa.i thought this might be a good spare or a fixer upper.thanks for any replies.

Re: 40hp force parts motor.

Need to make sure the spline count on the drive shaft are the same. If it is you might be able to swap them, however the adapter plate and the gear shift mechanism is different. The 1997 uses the Mercury style lower unit, which is different from the 1994.

Check compression. If it's good, you can get used stators cheap. The 1994 switchbox ignition system is harder to trouble-shoot and parts are a lot more expensive than the 1997 CDM ignition system.

Re: 40hp force parts motor.

When I had my 97 40hp, I had 137 pounds compression in both cylinders, hope it helps.....

If compression is good, get it. It is good price for $200. Who knows maybe the stator is not even bad but more like the trigger connections.

^^agree. Could be a good choice, and $200 isn't a terrible gamble for a potential runner. Believe I would look into using parts from your current motor to get the '97 up and running, if the current motor has some serious problems (like a bad powerhead). Maybe that $250 stator could be switched out, for example. By the way, motors are often incorrectly identified, so would want to be sure what the motor actually is. Good luck with it -- sounds promising.

Hi Jeff. disappointing, but still good. Lot's of spring cleaning going on in barns and garages.

(well, garages anyway!)
