Re: 40HP johnson electramatic 1960s ?
Welcome to Iboats!
40ESL69. 1969 from when Johnson's model numbers made sense.
Gas oil mixture is 50:1. Use 87 octane gas and TC-W3 outboard oil.
Spark plugs are Champion J4C gapped at .030".
Lower unit oil is the stuff that lubricates the gearbox just ahead of the propeller. It's a good idea to drain & replace this yearly mostly so you can inspect it for water intrusion or bits of metal. For the water reason, it's best to do it in the fall before layup. The Selectric (electramatic) gearbox is extremely sensitive to the type of oil you put in it. It must be BRP/OMC "Premium Blend" found at your local Johnny/Rude dealer. Get some new drain/vent plug seals while you're there. Here's how it's changed:
themarinedoctor.com/gearoilmain.htm
Using the wrong oil will quickly destroy that gearcase, causing it to slip. Repair is expensive.
I use a cheap pump to put in the oil because it's a lot less messy than the tubes. You can get the pumps from your dealer, Canadian Tire (in with the jerry cans) or Princess Auto (better price, better pump).

Do yourself a favor and get the factory manual from kencook.com, maxrules.com, marineengine.com, etc. I see quite a few on ebay right now cheap. Use these search terms:
(40, 40hp) (Evinrude, Johnson) manual 1969
We don't bother distinguishing Johnsons from Evinrudes because at that time the only differences were paint & cowlings.
Don't bother with the parts manual because you can see it online now:
http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e
The owner's manual is pretty useless. The service manual is the real valuable document.
You're probably going to want to rebuild the water pump and perhaps the carb, adjust the igntion, and do a link & sync. The manual will cover all that.

I hope that helps. Just ask if you need anything else.
