Re: 40HP Johnson has NO POWER!

When you redid the carb it probly had the old one peice bowl gasket. The new kits have a 2 peice gasket. There is a little dounut rubber gasket that goes on top of the tube in the middle of the tube where the metering rod runs through it. If this is left out the carb will suck so much air at WOT it will only feel like its at 1/3 throttle. I forgot this piece on my 25hp carb and it would only go about 6mph at WOT on a 15ft boat. So if you remember putting the 2 peice bowl gasket in disregard this.

I also have this one cylinder proble on my 81' 60hp johnson. I am hoping its the coil as i am not getting spark on the botom cyl. all the time.

Nuts and phooey. This has gone on long enough. Did you check to see if it will jump a spark gap of 1/4" on both wires? That should have been one of the first things you did. Firing across the .030" spark plug gap grounded to the head is not a valid test. Neither is seeing if your eyeballs light up when you hold onto the wire. Another test is to remove one spark plug wire and ground it and then start the motor. Then do the same on the other one. The one that makes no difference is the cylinder that is not firing, causing lack of power. Zero in on that cylinder. Maybe a bad coil or spark plug wire arcing through where it is clamped to the mag plate. But it could just be worn out or dirty points.

Noticed weak spark on one of the cylinders, so replaced the condensor's. And voila! Everything works fine, now I can get from 25 - 30 mph with power too :) Thanks for all the sugestions and help :)

I know this is kinda hijacking but i said i to had a 1 cyl problem. Mine was not spark i had spark it was just not firing, turns out the float somehow got out of adjustmet and was flooding the bottom cyl. changed needle and seat and float and runs like new. Just thought i would tell my solution if someone goes back to search this topic since i had a similar problem and i mentioned it, with a different fix.
