40HP lifters not working...

We took our boat with a 1997 Johnson 40hp out for the first time this season last week. We got the engine to start beautifully, buy the hydraulic lifters do not work. Because of this, we can not lower the motor, so we can't use the boat. When we click the buttons on the motor, all we can hear is a click. We tried pressing the up and down buttons numerous times, a few times we heard the motor run for a brief second, but nothing moved.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? We never have had this problem before.

Thanks

It's your tilt/trim not working. The most usual cause seems to be dirty/corroded electrical connection/s. Get them all shinny clean and see if that helps. Also, make sure your leg isn't locked in the upright position, by checking the lever on the port side of the unit. Best of luck. Rick.
