What in the world is the trip to getting the shifter mech lined back up in the lower unit??? When I pulled it, unit was in drive and shifter was in drive. Tried a couple times with the shifter mech cradle in the right spot and the unit in drive. Once bolted up it will not change gears at and there is a lot of pressure on the shifter...any ideas would be great..
This is a 40hp OMC '91 w/ tiller outboard. Thanks.
Feel free to give me a call as I have spent 5 hours to reinstall this...Chris (edit)

I never had one of these apart but this procedure sounds important and my be tricky to get right also seems that it might come apart if povot screw was removed.
My book only goes to 89 but did you screw the shift rod into the coupler 9 turns?Place shift yoke on shift plunger with part number up secured with appropriate grease?Insert prop shaft until rear edge of yoke is even with front edge of forward gear, install shift rod Be sure tangs on lever properly ingage yoke.install pivot screw with nut lock on threads.

Re: 40hp omc lower unit shifter

Thanks for clarifying. I have lost my manual and it has been some years since I have had this apart. I did remove the pivot screw from the yoke instead of disconnecting from up above at the motor. That is probably where I ran into trouble. I'll have to tackle it again tomorrow in the daylight. Just thought it should go together if the cradle is facing up with the part number up. Seems to be challenging...Thanks again.

Still issues on the getting the shifter fork mated to the cradle that is mounted on the shaft. Do I have to pull out the prop shaft to be able to get the shifter fork squarely onto the cradle?

Re: 40hp omc lower unit shifter

Attached is the diagram of the lower unit. The parts i am referring to are the rod (52) and the collar and fork (42 and 46). Part no. 12 is on the shaft in the bottom of the lower unit. I absolutely can not keep the cradle(12) centered on the shaft to stick the fork down in there on top of it. My manual is MIA, so any help before I take this thing to the dealer would be greatly appreciated.

boy you screwed up. if you had a manual, you would know never touch that screw, unless rebuilding the lower unit. the shift disconnects under the carbs. looks like a lower unit tear down and reseal.

DOUBLE POSTING, is frowned upon on the forum. i have deleted your identical post.

Thanks for the vote of confidence....No big deal. Was doing a reseal anyway. Less than one hour had the hub out and resealed, pulled the shaft out a little and reinserted shifter fork and reassembled. Good as new. Chalk it up to lesson learned. Turns out that there are 2 different cradles for the shifter fork on this lower unit. The other type you can put the fork back in with the prop shaft in there. Oh well...
