i have a 57 crestliner viking 14' with a gale 40hp runing a 10 3/8 x 13 1/2 prop and was wondering if i could get a litle more agressive prop for it? It accelerates very quickly and the rpms are around 5000rpms but i would like some more top speed.

Re: 40hp outboard prop??

What is the speed now?Is the 5,000 actual tach reading?
13 1/2 is the biggest available here.In 61 they offered a 14.
At 5000 your just about perfect. You could try raising the motor on the transom.Your older style gearcase won't allow too much height but every little bit helps.
You may be able to have a prop shop add a little pitch or cup.
If the props available here are a more sofisticated design it might give more speed
and may lend itself to modification.

the speed now is 28mph, the 5,000 is off of the tach that was added to the boat so idk how accurete that is. i cant raise the motor on the transom because it is held on with a clamp style it dosnt have a motor mount it hooks too. if i tilt my motor out 1 more hole would that help top speed because it was on the second hole and i moved it to the 3rd and it accellerates much quicker but no change in top speed. Also if i bought a new prop what would it cost to have a shop give it more pitch?

You can raise the motor some by just putting a stick on top of the transom to hold the height till you tighten the clamps.Add a 1/4 to 1/2" at a time just be sure the clamps have a good grip.
I assume your steering is forward move some weight to the stern try full trim may not do anything but give it a try.You might see if they can do anything with your present prop.
On a light fast boat speeds are possible up to about 32-35.If the boat has full rear deck, split cebter deck, front deck and wind shield it is about 350 lbs dry.bare boat with short front deck is about 240.If it has forward steering you could gain a couple of mph by unhooking and steering at the stern with the tiller. Not practical but faster.
