I got a 40hp johnny and runs good cept it overheated . I ran it for a minutes and noticed no water coming out the 2" hoie about half way up the mid section . i saw videos of that port pouring water out . also , no gear oil . the motor sat for about 10 years and it shifts fine . but how do i get the lower unit off . i took out 6 bolts and 1 long bolt pointing downward . got it seperated about 1" but thats' as far as it goes before i feel it get hung up . does the drive shaft slide right out ? also , theres no shift shaft . the shift ron connects to a coupler . so how do i change the water pump ? do i need to drop the lower gearcase ? ouch !!!!!,....any input is greatly appriciated . 40HP L UNIT.jpg

See that little square cover on the side of the leg - with two bolts holding it on? Remove that cover and you'll find the shift rod coupler. COMPLETELY remove the bottom bolt to disconnect the lower shift rod and the lower unit will drop down. The water pump sits on top of the lower unit, and the housing is held on by 3 or 4 bolts. The impeller is inside.

thanks lindy , that was too easy . but now i think i have a bigger problem . i took out the screw which i thought was the oil drain/fill . the top screw said 'oil level ' and i looked down and pulled out a pin . i found the oil fill later underneath . now what ? it does'nt go back in . did i screw up my gears ? am i right by saying it holds the cradle ? also , does the clutch dog move to and fro horizontally ? and to make matters worse , the driveshaft slipped up and the gears are'nt working right . am i panicking for nothing ? ,.......this might be an allnighter if you get this soon .40 bad impeller.jpg

Yeah - you pulled the pivot pin for the shift yoke. Set the lower unit on it's side and look thru the little hole. Get an awl or ice pick and move the shift rod and try to re-align the hole in the yoke using the awl. Once you get it aligned, replace the pin (put a little sealer on it to prevent water intrusion) and NEVER remove it again, unless you need to get into the gearcase.

Once you remove the water pump housing, the driveshaft will pull right out. No problem - just push it back in. You may need to turn it a little to get the splines to align with the pinion gear.

It's easier to get that pivot pin back in with the lower unit off the boat, so you can jiggle the shift rod to get it aligned.

i had the l/u off already doing an impeller job . and the pin went in no problem . but the shift rod would'nt budge up or down so i wound up taking the bottom off anyway . lined up the cradle w/ the clutch dog and its a done deal . thanks for all your input.
