hey yall i got a 40 ELTO motor on a boat i bought today and the tilt rins but dont want to lift right, IF you lift it a litle while somebody is pushing the button it will go up, once it get part way up it will go on its own but very slow and making gurgling noises, how do i go about checking the fluid level? or anything else that might be wrong..

thanks

Re: 40hp tilt & trim ???

On the stbd side of the power trim unit, you will find the manual relief valve. It will be a plastic screw that will accept a slotted screw driver. First, check to make sure it's tight. Do not over tighten. If it is tight, loosen it a few turns, and you will be able to lift the motor to full tilt by hand, and rest it on the tilt locks. Oil level plug should be staring out at you from the front of the trim pump. Add oil till it flows out of hole. Tighten relief plug and cycle the trim electrically. If this thing is low enough to make gurgling sounds, then it's a good bet it's low on oil. You may have to repeat this proceedure once or twice to get enough oil into the system to allow the trim to work on it's own. Hope this helps.
