Hey Paul, I hope you see this. I tried emailing You. I had my 40HP Big Twin out on the lake first time this year. Tach circuit works great. I can only wring 4200 RPM out of the motor. Butterfly appears to be wide open. First I tried a 10.5 X 12 prop, and only got 4000 RPM, changed after to a 10.75 x 11 and got a maximum of 4200. This is with two adults in the boat and two small kids (under a 100lbs. total) 14 foot fibreglass trihull. Should I be looking deeper into the engine?

Sorry I didn't respond. I haven't had a chance to do a definitive test but I kept expecting to do one imminently, so I kept holding off on my reply. I have a laser tachometer to confirm with but unfortunately, it hasn't all come together just yet.

Ideally you want to be right around 4500RPM, so you're not that far off. But I think you should be able to swing the 12" prop no problem. What is your compression like? Also, since you don't have the adjustable high speed needle it might be worth checking to see if you're running a little rich or lean. Shut down the engine as quickly as possible after a couple minutes at WOT. Let it cool off and remove the spark plugs. Examine the firing ends to see if there's evidence of running a little rich or lean. Ideally the plug colour should be tan.

You didn't happen to have a GPS with you did you?

Also, feel free to jack up the engine on the transom quite a bit. Usually this will work pretty well with a BT. Keep an eye on water flow at start and in reverse while you do.

You're not running up in the mountains I take it? Just about 2000 ft or so?
