It appears to be a through hub gear case.
He said he was using a Ron Hill "over the hub" 18" Cleaver prop.
I assume that indicates the exhaust somehow exits over the hub of the prop.
I don't know if that means around the hub or if it exhausts in a position above the hub."over the hub".

A little research; indeed an over hub prop passes the exhaust over the small hub of the "over hub" prop.

I watched the video as well and can only say...do the math! If anybody wants to know how fast their setup could possible run, do the math. If you know your prop pitch and the max RPMs your engine can turn with that prop pitch, it is simple math to figure out the absolute maximum speed any setup can run. And then come down to earth, actually water, and factor in prop slippage, friction of the hull and you will get a more likely speed.

To be educated by the educated : What's a Ron Hill ? Know cleaver props rides at high water level. If so he's surely over revving that 20 horse pass max wot rpm factory stated for his 20, he'll blow his powerhead any time soon. Still No Way he's achieving 44 MPH..

I recognize the Ron Hill name from previous posts. Near as I can tell he or his group design high performance props.
As I posted before he's running a 18" prop.Using a 19" number (allowing for the cup) I calculates that 5700 rpm at 10% slip
produces 43 mph. Now maybe the boat is too heavy to make 5700 or maybe that drive has higher slip.
I suspect that it is not a stock 20 nor is it stock parts. I figure some major fiddling has been going on.
