Re: 45 mph! 3.0

I would love that! I used to ride years ago when i lived up north.
Freezing fun it was!

Yep but the difference is the machines are light years ahead of even 15 years ago. Of course the 4 strokes are getting more and more common now. If it wasn't for snowmobiling I think I would go crazy during MN winters.

To be honest I wasn't even looking at the tack. But for the member that ask about the prop, It had a 141/2 x 19 on it when I bought it (wasn't bad a few dings) and I went to www.mercurymarine.com/propellers/prop-selector and bought a cheap Michigan Wheel Vortex XHS 141/4 X 21 cause thats what was recomended for average run around. It wasn't expensive. I'm not sure what the 2 stroke blogs are about but I use to race a Yamaha 125MX back in the day and I graduated from High School in Anchorage Alaska and have drivin a few Scorpion race snow mobiles (for fun didn't own) around a circle track that scared the livin shizilel out of me. My boat is tame by those standards. At 53 I've owned a 62 vett, A 70 GTO convertable, a 70 Chev Malibue SS and a few others to name a few. As far as boats go this is my first and just wanted to say the Gators were swimmin for cover here in Florida last Sunday. Like I said high and tight.

Re: 45 mph! 3.0

What year SR and engine do you have? A gps is a double edge sword. I prefer the speedo on my boat since my true gps speed is always a bit slower over 45 mph. Most smart phones have a free or included app with a gps. I prefer to think my boat will go 52 mph with my power prop when in fact it won't but I love to break 50 regardless. Truthfully I can believe 45mph even on GPS with a 3.0 even in a heavyier Sea Ray. It's the 50mph claims on non StingRays that I am skeptical of.

I have one of the earlier Stingrays with a 140 HP 3.0. In fact, we have THE oldest boat in the Stingray Boat Owners Club. Models like mine are lighter than the newer hulls. Our bottom is solid as a rock, but the sides are noticable thinner. Nevertheless, not so much as one single spider crack after 26 years.

45 mph is a piece of cake....LOL. I'll pit mine against any of the ZP hulls. My GPS and original factory Teleflex speedometer are within 1 mph after 10 mph is exceeded. My digital Lowrance paddlewheel reads spot on BELOW 10 mph, but reads 3 or 4 mph high after you reach about 20.

I run a 20 1/2 pitch (repitched) Michigan double cupped that puts me right at 4800 at WOT.

What year is your Stingray? Didn't the company find and restore the very first Stingray off the line some years back?
I replaced my oem 21inch Black Max with a Cupped 21 pitch Hustler with vent holes. It's too much for my 4.3 since I lost about 400rpm's but can trim to the max limit at wot and it keeps gripping and actually shoots a small rooster which I never thought possible. Can get right to 4850 when alone but used to have a lot left at 4850 with the old prop. Would like the grip of the Hustler and the speed of the Black Max. FWIW I think the vent holes are a gimic on a low hp engine like the 4.3. They make idle a bit louder and a bit more vibration which is what the directions say to expect.

Ours is a 1984. They made their first hull in 1979.

As a member of their "club" we have been treated to factory tours, which included free hotel accomodations, first class meals for the 2 day extravaganza, and boat rides in every single model they manufacture.

The "classic" restored oldie is on display in their home offices. I'm not sure if its the #1 hull", but its surely one of the first. It was owned by a neighbor in Stingray's home lake, where they do all their R&D. As the story goes, they traded him for a brand new one. Its quite a sight to see one of the old Mercruisers with the fin on top that looks like it just came out of the showroom.
